COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — With students returning to school, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding young drivers and their families about the importance of safe driving habits.
According to the Patrol, drivers ages 15 to 24 were involved in 158,287 traffic crashes in Ohio over the past two years. An incorrect action by the young driver contributed to 66% of those crashes.
Crashes where young drivers were at fault resulted in 388 deaths and 42,879 injuries during the same period.
The Patrol said the leading causes of crashes involving young drivers include following too closely, failing to yield or running red lights and stop signs, unsafe speed, driving off the roadway and driving left of center.
Officials say inexperienced drivers need time and practice to develop safe driving skills.
“Learning to drive is an exciting time in a teen’s life, but with it comes added responsibility,” Gov. Mike DeWine said.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is using educational programs to help young drivers make safer decisions behind the wheel.
One program, DRIVE to Live, works with schools and community groups to educate young people and promote responsible decision-making while driving.
