Movie attendance rebounded this summer

If your summer included a trip to the movies, you may have noticed, you weren’t alone.

UNDATED—(AVC News)–After years of unease, the summer box office’s across the U.S. rallied to over $4.76 billion in domestic ticket sales between May 1 and Aug. 31, thanks to popular films such as Spiderman; Brand New Day, The Odyssey and Toy Story 5.

According to entertainment industry’s Variety magazine, movie ticket sales increased 26.1% from last year, better than any summer dating back to 2013, which set the record at $4.755 billion, and was anchored by movies such as “Iron Man 3,” “Despicable Me 2” and “Man of Steel.”

Reports say that summer revenue figures were not adjusted for inflation and theater so-called “popcorn season” ran about a week longer than in the past.

Also, sources point out that higher ticket prices obscured an overall decline in movie attendance. According to the N.Y. Times; between January 1 and August 16, domestic theaters sold an estimated 568.4 million tickets, which is down 30% from the same period in 2019.

However, Rentrak, a prominent media measurement and box office analytics company reports that the summer box office apparent success signals that after five years of uncertainty about the movie industry, people appear to be falling back in love with the silver screen.
