Ohio ranks third in high school sports participation

















COLUMBUS, Ohio–(AVC Sports)–Ohio is the third-largest state for high school sports participation duirng the 2025-26 school year, according to the annual NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey.

Ohio had almost 350,000 high school student-athletes last season, following Texas and California with Illinois and Pennsylvania rounding out the top five.

According to a release from the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Ohio ranked in the top five nationally in participation of most sports.

It’s now the national leader in the number of high schools that have a team in three sports: girls wrestling (525), girls bowling (505) and boys bowling (517)

Ohio ranks third nationally in high school sports participation with nearly 350,000 student-athletes, behind only Texas and California, and leads the nation in schools offering girls wrestling and boys and girls bowling.
