MORRISTOWN, Ohio (AVC News) — A major $27 million improvement project at the Interstate 70 and State Route 149 interchange near Morristown is moving into its next phase as construction begins later this month.
The Ohio Department of Transportation said the project at Exit 208 is intended to support continued economic growth in the area while improving traffic flow and safety.
Shelly & Sands Inc. was awarded the contract in May 2025. Utility relocation work has been underway over the past year in preparation for major construction.
Beginning the week of June 22, crews will conduct nighttime traffic shifts on I-70 to establish work zones. Once traffic patterns are in place, demolition will begin on the bridge carrying I-70 over State Route 149.
The project includes replacing and widening the I-70 overpass bridges, expanding State Route 149 to six lanes, resurfacing interchange ramps and relocating Reco Drive to improve local access. Construction is expected to continue through summer 2029.
During the initial phase, eastbound I-70 traffic will operate in a contraflow pattern, with the left lane crossing into the westbound side and the right lane shifted to the outside. Eastbound lanes will have a 12-foot width restriction.
Westbound traffic will also shift to the right, with 11-foot lane width restrictions in place. ODOT said two lanes of traffic in each direction will remain open throughout the bridge replacement project.
Future impacts on State Route 149 will include temporary traffic shifts, 21-day closures of eastbound and westbound I-70 ramps and a 21-day closure of Reco Drive. Dates for those closures will be announced later.
