WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ohio (AVC News) — A Washington County man was arrested after a home invasion in Grandview Township early Sunday left two elderly residents with gunshot wounds, one of whom later died.
Washington County sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:33 a.m. Oct. 4 for a reported home invasion involving two shooting victims.
New Matamoras Squad and Newport Squad assisted at the scene. Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where they were stabilized before being transferred to a Columbus hospital. One victim later died from the gunshot wounds.
Investigators identified Baxter L. Grimes as the suspect. An Everbridge alert was issued, and a citizen tip led authorities to a sighting of Grimes. Detectives later took him into custody following a foot pursuit.
Investigators also determined Grimes had burglarized another residence in the New Matamoras area earlier that night and stolen a firearm.
Grimes was arrested and charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder, aggravated burglary, two counts of felonious assault, theft of a firearm, four counts of tampering with evidence and burglary.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office credited emergency responders, law enforcement agencies and area residents with helping bring the search to an end quickly.
The office also thanked the New Matamoras and Newport squads, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Washington County Prosecutor’s Office and Ohio Department of Natural Resources for their assistance.
