NASHPORT, Ohio (AVC News) — State Rep. Adam Holmes is reminding residents impacted by recent severe thunderstorms and flooding to take precautions as communities across eastern Ohio continue recovering from the storms.
Holmes, R-Nashport, said government response programs are underway but encouraged residents to continue helping their neighbors.
“We have a historic tradition of being good neighbors, and that tradition is especially needed during times of crisis,” Holmes said. “Government response programs are underway, but we must continue to look out for one another.”
Gov. Mike DeWine recently declared Perry and Muskingum counties to be in a state of emergency following the severe weather.
Holmes highlighted several safety recommendations from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, including:
- Know evacuation and shelter plans. Residents should learn evacuation routes and flash flood response procedures and keep several days of food, water and cleaning supplies available.
- Know where to seek shelter. Residents under a flood warning should seek shelter immediately and continue monitoring changing conditions.
- Have a family communication plan. Everyone in the household should know the plan and have contact information for family members.
- Check on neighbors and family members. Residents are encouraged to check on older neighbors to make sure they have adequate food, medicine and water and determine whether they need assistance evacuating.
- Use generators safely. Generators and fuel should be used outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Working carbon monoxide detectors should be installed on every level of a home.
- Prepare for pets and livestock. Animals should have access to safe shelter on higher ground and clean drinking water during severe weather and flooding.
