PERRY COUNTY, Ohio (AVC News) — Perry County Emergency Management Agency officials are urging residents whose homes or property were affected by the August flooding to contact the agency before beginning repairs or reconstruction.
Residents whose property is located within a Special Flood Hazard Area, or floodplain, may be required to obtain a floodplain development permit and have the structure evaluated to determine whether it sustained substantial damage.
Officials say residents should first determine whether their property is located within a regulated floodplain. Perry County EMA can help residents determine their property’s status and explain what steps may be required.
Depending on the extent and type of proposed work, property owners may need to provide additional information, plans, elevation information or other documentation before a permit can be issued.
Residents are urged to obtain all required approvals before beginning reconstruction. Starting work without the necessary permits could create additional issues for property owners and may affect the ability to bring a structure into compliance with floodplain regulations.

Officials said the permitting process is intended to help ensure flood-damaged properties are rebuilt safely and in accordance with local, state and federal floodplain requirements.
