COSHOCTON, Ohio (AVC News) — A New Philadelphia man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of strangulation and domestic violence in Coshocton County.
Jason E. Mathews, 49, was indicted in January 2026 on one count of fourth-degree felony strangulation and one count of first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence. A jury trial was held Aug. 13 and 14 at the Coshocton County Common Pleas Courthouse, where jurors found Mathews guilty on both counts.
Following the verdict, the court ordered a pre-sentence investigation and Mathews was held at the Coshocton County Justice Center. At a sentencing hearing Sept. 21, the court determined that a prison term was consistent with the purposes of felony sentencing and sentenced Mathews to 18 months in a state prison for the strangulation conviction. The court found the offense was a felony of violence, the victim suffered physical harm and Mathews had multiple prior felony convictions.
Mathews was also sentenced to 180 days in the Coshocton County Justice Center for domestic violence. That sentence merges with the strangulation sentence for purposes of sentencing. Mathews has 42 days of jail credit in the case and was remanded to the Coshocton County Sheriff for transportation to a state penal facility.
