Mr. George “Sonny” A. Alfman, 85 of Norwich

George A. “Sonny” Alfman, 85, of Norwich, passed away Wednesday (September 30, 2026) at Embassy of Cambridge.

He was born November 20, 1940 in Rendville, the only son of the late George Henry Alfman and Lorraine (Neal) Alfman.

Sonny worked for NCR in Cambridge for twenty-nine years and then for twelve years at Muskingum University as their broadcast engineer.

Sonny “W8FHF” was an amateur radio operator for sixty-four years and held several positions in Ohio for the ARRL – the national organization of radio amateurs. He was a life member of the Cambridge Amateur Radio Association.

He loved dancing and traveling. Sonny was known to always have his toolkit with him when he visited his children, ready and willing to help with whatever project needed his attention. He also loved his cats.

Sonny is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Linda “Lyn” (Whitehair) Alfman. He is also survived by his seven children: Ron (Ginger) Alfman of Cambridge, Sandy Smith of Cambridge, Jeff (Laurie) Alfman of Cambridge, Jay (Liz Hutchison) Alfman of Cambridge, Mark (Sharon) Alfman of Mt. Perry, Hank (Judy Mojica) Alfman of Blacklick, and Carol (Mark) Hughes of Florence SC; his fourteen grandchildren: Tony (Jenny), Tara, Steven, Shanna, Zach, Kenzie (Josh), Devin (Sarah), Katie (Noah), Lexy (Tristin), Blaze, Kasi (Steve), Lexie (Brandon), Kirsten, and Chelsey; his nineteen great-grandchildren: Lydia, Easton, Emmersyn, Aspen, Asher, Miranda, Brooklyn, Drake, Christopher, Oliver, Piper, Marshall, Eliza, Willa, Rylee, Gabriella, Oaklynn, Jayce, and Liam; and his two great-great-granddaughters: Londyn and Naomi.

Calling Hours 

Visitation will be held Monday (October 5, 2026) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and also on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville.

Services and Burial 

Funeral services will follow at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) at 12 p.m. with Evan. Mark Beros officiating.

Cemetery Burial will be at Guernsey County Memory Gardens, Cambridge.
