COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — As summer travel increases across the state, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists that obeying posted speed limits can help prevent crashes and save lives.
According to the Patrol, speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities on Ohio roadways. Between 2021 and 2025, Ohio recorded 146,961 crashes involving drivers traveling at unsafe speeds, including 1,663 fatal crashes that claimed 1,839 lives.
“Speed limits are chosen with one goal in mind – to keep everyone traveling on the road safe,” Governor Mike DeWine said. “By following the posted speed limit and driving responsibly, drivers can prevent needless tragedies and ensure that everyone enjoys the warm months ahead.”
Patrol Superintendent Colonel Charles A. Jones said speeding reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. He said troopers will maintain a highly visible presence on Ohio roadways this summer and continue enforcing speed limits and other traffic laws.
The Highway Patrol also reminds motorists that speed limits are based on road design, traffic volume and surrounding conditions, and are intended to improve safety for everyone using the road.
