COSHOCTON, Ohio (AVC News) — A 71-year-old Coshocton man is facing a felonious assault charge after authorities say he shot and injured his 24-year-old granddaughter during a domestic dispute Wednesday.
According to the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched Aug. 19 to a residence on Township Road 180 in White Eyes Township following a reported shooting.
Investigators determined Rick Phillips had been involved in a verbal altercation with his granddaughter. During the incident, Phillips allegedly retrieved a shotgun from inside the residence and fired at the woman while she was outside in the yard, striking and injuring her.
Deputies provided aid to the victim when they arrived and eventually safely removed her and Phillips’ wife from the property.
Phillips remained barricaded inside the residence, prompting the activation of the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and agency negotiators.
Negotiators established communication with Phillips, who eventually exited the residence and surrendered to deputies in the front yard without further incident.
Phillips was taken into custody and is being held at the Coshocton County Justice Center.
He has been charged with felonious assault. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues and the case is reviewed by the Coshocton County Prosecutor’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies, SRT members, negotiators, dispatchers, detectives, K9 personnel and other agency members assisted in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.
Coshocton County EMS, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Coshocton County Prosecutor’s Office also assisted with the investigation.
