CAMBRIDGE, Ohio (AVC News) — The Cambridge Fire Department has new leadership following the swearing-in of three longtime department members during a recent Cambridge City Council meeting.
Scott Elliott was sworn in as the new Cambridge fire chief, replacing former Chief Jeff Deeks. Steve Helton was sworn in as assistant fire chief, while Josh Hatfield was sworn in as a captain earlier that day.
Jordan Lowery has also been named the department’s new engineer, although he was unavailable for the swearing-in ceremony.
All four have previously served with the Cambridge Fire Department.
Helton, who has been with the department for 24 years, thanked his family and Deeks for his leadership and support throughout his career.
Helton said he appreciates the opportunity to continue serving Cambridge residents and looks forward to the department’s future.
Elliott, who has 26 years of experience in the fire service, said he never imagined he would one day become chief of the Cambridge Fire Department.
During his remarks, Elliott recalled growing up in Woodsfield and watching the Woodsfield Volunteer Fire Department conduct training near his childhood home. He said those experiences helped lead him toward a career in the fire service.
Elliott said he has never woken up during his 26-year career and not wanted to go to work, describing the fire service as more than a job and as a way of life.
He credited his family and the members of the Cambridge Fire Department for supporting him throughout his career.
Elliott specifically thanked his wife, Lorie, daughters Erica and Chloe, parents, in-laws and siblings for their support and understanding of the demands of the profession.
As he begins his new role, Elliott said he intends to build on the foundation established by Deeks and continue the department’s traditions of service, professionalism and pride.
“I look forward to working with the city administration, city council, and my brothers and sisters at the firehouse as we continue to build on the foundation left by my mentor, Chief Deeks,” Elliott said.
Hatfield was sworn in as captain earlier in the day. City officials described him as a longtime member of the department.
Lowery, the department’s new engineer, was out of town and unable to attend the ceremony.
Cambridge officials and council members congratulated the new leadership team and thanked Deeks for his years of service as fire chief.
