ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AVC News) — A Columbus man is wanted in Muskingum County after authorities say he committed burglary and felony theft while already facing multiple felony retail theft cases in Franklin County.
Brian Murdock is facing five separate felony cases involving alleged retail theft in Columbus, according to the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors say Franklin County records show Murdock was indicted on felony theft charges in April and was indicted again in June on additional felony offenses. He was arrested in June in connection with the April charges and released on a recognizance, or cash-free, bond.
According to prosecutors, Murdock was later indicted in four additional felony cases. Franklin County Judge Mark Serrott again released him on a cash-free bond.
At the end of July, Murdock allegedly committed another theft in Muskingum County.
Zanesville Police Detective Jason Keck investigated the case, resulting in charges including second-degree felony burglary involving an alleged theft from a retail business where Murdock had previously been trespassed.
The burglary charge also includes a specification alleging Murdock is a repeat violent offender.
Murdock is also charged with felony theft and possession of criminal tools. Prosecutors allege he used his girlfriend’s vehicle in connection with the offenses.
Murdock is currently wanted in Muskingum County. Prosecutors have recommended a $750,000 bond, citing his criminal record, the allegations in the case and his previous release conditions.
Muskingum County Prosecutor Ron Welch said retail theft can have broader effects on businesses and consumers.
“Retail theft doesn’t just harm the businesses,” Welch said. “Costs associated with retail theft are eventually going to be paid by customers.”
