OLD WASHINGTON, Ohio (AVC News) — Guernsey County hay producers are invited to participate in a hay contest hosted by the Guernsey Soil and Water Conservation District in partnership with Guernsey County OSU Extension.
Each Guernsey County hay producer is eligible for one free forage test, paid for by the conservation district. Additional samples may be submitted at the landowner’s expense.
Samples will be accepted from Aug. 3 through Sept. 26. Hay must have been produced in Guernsey County during the 2026 hay season, and samples must be collected using a forage probe.
The contest includes three categories: pure legume hay, consisting of at least 80% alfalfa or clover; grass-legume mixed hay; and pure grass hay.
Winners will be determined based on total digestible nutrients, or TDN, with crude protein used as a tiebreaker.
Winners in each category will be announced during the Guernsey Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual meeting Oct. 22. All contestants will receive a copy of their forage analysis.
Samples can be dropped off during business hours at the Guernsey Soil and Water office at 335-C Old National Road in Old Washington.
