ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AVC News) — Mosquitoes collected near Old Adamsville Road in Muskingum County have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department.
The Ohio Department of Health laboratory confirmed the positive mosquito samples. No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Muskingum County.
Health officials said about 80% of people infected with West Nile virus develop no symptoms. About 20% may experience mild illness, including fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash. Fewer than 1% develop severe illness. Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to contact a healthcare provider about possible testing.
The health department is urging residents to reduce their risk of infection by avoiding outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, wearing long sleeves and pants when possible, using insect repellent containing DEET and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
The health department plans to spray areas where the infected mosquito pools were found. Muskingum County residents who would like mosquito spraying in their neighborhood can call 740-454-9741, ext. 300, and leave a request on the mosquito control voicemail.
