ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AVC News) — An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was injured Sept. 7 after a vehicle struck a patrol cruiser from behind during a traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Muskingum County.
The trooper was conducting a traffic stop on the right berm when a westbound vehicle driven by Michael H. McGuire Jr., 44, of Canton, struck the patrol car.
The impact pushed the patrol cruiser into the rear of the vehicle that was being stopped.
The trooper, McGuire and two occupants of the stopped vehicle were transported to Genesis Hospital in Zanesville with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash scene was assisted by New Concord Fire and EMS, Perry Fire and EMS, Washington Township EMS, Genesis EMS and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Patrol, McGuire later admitted to intentionally striking the patrol cruiser.
A criminal complaint was filed through the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office charging McGuire with two counts of felonious assault on a peace officer and seven counts of felonious assault related to occupants of the stopped vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation.
