COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — The Ohio Rail Development Commission has approved grant funding for two rail rehabilitation projects in Richland and Guernsey counties totaling nearly $1.6 million in overall project investment.
The projects were approved Sept. 24 in Columbus and will support critical improvements to existing rail infrastructure.
Ashland Railway was awarded a $744,000 grant to assist with the rehabilitation of four miles of mainline track along the railroad’s Willard Line in Richland County. The project is Phase 2 of a three-phase plan to upgrade 12 miles of track along the line.
The railroad plans to install 7,000 ties, replace tie plates and add ballast. The total project investment is estimated at nearly $1.3 million.
The improvements are intended to help maintain safe and efficient rail operations along the line, which serves industries across north-central Ohio.
In Guernsey County, Independence Rail Works Ltd., a division of The Zemba Companies, was awarded a $190,000 grant for rehabilitation of approximately three miles of track between Derwent and Pleasant City.
The company plans to install ties and distribute more than 1,500 tons of ballast. The project is expected to improve rail access for existing customers and help attract new business to the area.
The total investment in the Guernsey County project is estimated at $380,000.
Ohio Rail Development Commission Executive Director Matthew Dietrich said improving existing rail infrastructure is important to maintaining safe railroad operations and supporting companies across Ohio.
The commission also appointed Megan McClory, its secretary-treasurer, as acting executive director ahead of Dietrich’s upcoming retirement. McClory will serve as acting executive director while continuing her duties as secretary-treasurer.
