Ohio Mobile ID Now Available in Google Wallet

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — Ohio residents with Android devices can now add their Ohio driver license or state identification card to Google Wallet.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that Ohio Mobile ID is now available through Google Wallet, giving residents a digital companion to their physical identification card.

The digital ID can be used to verify age or identity at select businesses and venues, many state buildings, all TSA checkpoints nationwide and Ohio casinos.

Users can review exactly what information is being shared when presenting their digital ID. The IDs are encrypted on the device and protected by personal authentication. If a device is lost or stolen, the digital ID can be deleted through remote data-erase features.

“Ohioans have been asking for an Android solution, and we are pleased to deliver it,” said Charlie Norman, registrar of the Ohio BMV.

To add an Ohio ID to Google Wallet, users can open the Google Wallet app, select “Add to Wallet,” choose “ID Card,” select Ohio and follow the verification prompts.

Participation in Ohio Mobile ID is voluntary and free.

The BMV emphasizes that Ohioans who use the digital ID should continue carrying their physical driver license or state ID.

Mobile IDs can only be presented and validated through compatible readers designed to decrypt the credential, similar to tap-to-pay technology.
