November Is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month; Safety Officials Urge Proper Generator Use

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, and safety advocates are encouraging residents to take precautions when using portable generators as winter weather and seasonal storms approach.

The Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association is promoting its “Take It Outside” campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by improperly used generators.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, invisible gas that can be deadly. Portable generators can produce dangerous levels of the gas when operated too close to homes or other enclosed spaces.

The association emphasizes that portable generators should always be operated outdoors and far away from buildings.

The campaign offers free safety toolkits for media organizations, fire departments and safety educators, along with printable generator safety checklists for households and job sites. Public service announcements are also available for radio, video and social media.

The association is offering interviews with bilingual spokesperson Guillermo Rodriguez, who can speak in English and Spanish.

Rodriguez, who serves as the association’s Marketing Committee chair and national spokesperson, has more than 20 years of experience leading global product safety programs. He is also senior director of global product safety and compliance at Harbor Freight Tools.

Additional information and public safety resources are available through the Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association’s “Take It Outside” campaign.
