IRS Extends Tax Deadline For Ohioans In Seven Counties After Severe Storms

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — Eligible taxpayers in seven Ohio counties, including Morgan, Muskingum and Perry, have until Feb. 1, 2027, to file certain federal tax returns and make tax payments following severe storms and flooding that began Aug. 10.

The Internal Revenue Service extended the deadline for eligible individuals and businesses in Clermont, Franklin, Hamilton, Licking, Morgan, Muskingum and Perry counties. The relief covers certain federal tax filing and payment deadlines that fall between Aug. 10, 2026, and Jan. 31, 2027.

The extension applies to qualifying returns and payments, including quarterly payroll and certain excise tax returns normally due Nov. 2. Penalties on eligible payroll and excise tax deposits due Aug. 10-24 will be waived if the deposits were made by Aug. 25.

The extension does not apply to tax payments related to 2025 individual income tax returns, which were due April 15, 2026, even for taxpayers who received an extension to file those returns.

The IRS will automatically provide relief to eligible taxpayers in the designated counties. People who live or operate a business outside those counties but were affected by the storms can request assistance by calling the IRS Special Services line at 866-562-5227.

Taxpayers who receive an IRS notice assessing a late-filing or late-payment penalty for a deadline covered by the relief should call the number listed on the notice to request penalty abatement.

Disaster-Related Casualty Losses

Taxpayers in a federally declared disaster area may be able to claim disaster-related casualty losses on their federal income tax return for either the year the disaster occurred or the preceding tax year.

Additional time may be available to make that election, generally up to six months after the federal income tax return due date for the disaster year, without regard to filing extensions.

More information about the relief is available through U.S. Rep. Troy Balderson’s office.
