CHICAGO, Ill. (AVC News) — FEMA has approved more than $21 million in post-disaster funding for communities in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, including more than $539,000 for road and infrastructure repairs in Belmont County.
The funding includes more than $19.6 million through FEMA’s Public Assistance program for projects in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The program reimburses communities for disaster-related costs, including repairs to critical infrastructure, public buildings and roads, as well as emergency measures taken to protect public health and safety.
Belmont County will receive more than $539,000 for repairs to road shoulders, guardrails and embankments damaged by landslides and mudslides.
Other Public Assistance awards include more than $9.4 million to Presque Isle Electric & Gas in Michigan for emergency protective measures following a severe winter storm, more than $4.6 million to the Michigan State Police/Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division for emergency protective measures at the State Emergency Operations Center, and more than $2.3 million to Otsego County, Michigan, for debris removal following a severe winter storm.
FEMA also is awarding more than $1.4 million through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for projects in Illinois intended to prevent, eliminate or reduce future disaster-related damage.
The Illinois projects include $865,625 for improvements to the Sny Island levee, including work to reduce seepage and improve levee slope stability; $448,000 for drainage and stormwater management improvements in Cicero; and $170,048 for a generator at Macomb City Hall.
FEMA said the hazard mitigation program supports projects such as acquiring hazard-prone properties, improving drainage and flood protection, adopting and enforcing building codes, constructing safe rooms and upgrading utilities and infrastructure.
The agency coordinates with states on hazard mitigation projects as part of its approach to state-led disaster recovery and mitigation supported by federal funding.
FEMA said the latest awards are part of billions of dollars in disaster recovery funding provided to state and local communities following recent natural disasters.
