CAMBRIDGE, Ohio (AVC News) — A local grassroots group plans to hold a public rally Tuesday, Oct. 13, to raise concerns about privacy, fiscal transparency and the use of automated license plate reader cameras in Cambridge.
Block the Flock: Cambridge, Ohio, announced that the demonstration will begin at 5 p.m. in front of the Cambridge City Administration Building at 814 Wheeling Ave. If additional space is needed, participants will gather near the courthouse.
The rally will precede the Cambridge City Council meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Organizers and residents plan to attend the meeting to continue raising questions with city officials about the camera system.
The group contends that the automated license plate readers, which record traffic at key locations around the city, were installed without public engagement or a formal City Council vote. Organizers are calling for greater public oversight and transparency regarding the system.
“We deeply respect our local law enforcement and the hard work they do every day,” said Amy Kissinger, spokesperson for Block the Flock: Cambridge, Ohio. “However, turning our hometown into a surveillance state that logs the daily movements of everyday drivers without a warrant is a step backward for privacy and local control.”
Kissinger said communities elsewhere are reconsidering the use of such systems and that Cambridge residents deserve more transparency from elected officials.
The group is encouraging residents, taxpayers and members of the media to attend the rally and council meeting.
