CAMBRIDGE, Ohio (AVC News) — Cambridge City Schools is warning parents and community members about a scam involving fake school documents and checks.
The district said it has received reports from multiple parents and residents who appear to have been targeted after completing an online form related to an auto wrap campaign.
According to the district, individuals have received documents by mail that are designed to resemble Cambridge City Schools letterhead and school district checks.
The documents are not legitimate, the district said.
Cambridge City Schools is warning anyone who receives the documents not to take the checks to a bank or attempt to cash or deposit them.
The Federal Trade Commission has previously warned about auto wrap scams in which victims receive fraudulent checks after responding to advertisements or online offers. In similar schemes, scammers may instruct recipients to deposit the check and use some of the money to pay a supposed installer. Banks can later determine that the check is fraudulent, leaving the victim responsible for money that was spent.
The district is asking anyone who receives the fraudulent documents to notify Cambridge City Schools or local law enforcement.
Officials said additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
The district’s warning was also posted on its social media accounts.
