COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) – The National Fire Protection Association is focusing on the safe use and charging of lithium-ion batteries during this year’s Fire Prevention Week.
The week, running Oct. 4 through 10, is using the theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” to educate the public about the potential fire risks associated with rechargeable batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters. While the batteries store large amounts of energy in a small space, they can overheat, catch fire or explode if they are damaged or charged improperly.
Fire safety officials recommend using the charger that came with a device or one approved by the manufacturer. Devices should be charged on hard, flat surfaces such as tables or desks, rather than on beds, couches or under pillows where heat can become trapped. People should also stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smokes or develops an unusual smell.
Larger battery-powered items, including e-bikes, scooters and power tools, should be charged outside and away from exits because their larger batteries can store more energy and fires can spread quickly.
