Blast from the Past: Some breakfast cereals returning with prizes inside

A story for your consideration during breakfast;

UNDATED–(AVC News)–Many remember digging deep into your favorite breakfast cereal looking for the enclosed toy.

Toys and other prizes were once commonly found in cereal boxes marketed to kids. These cheap, mass-produced plastic items were often released as tie-ins for cartoons and movies, but they eventually fell out of favor due to safety concerns and rising criticism of marketing sugary foods to children.

According to a Nielsen survey, breakfast cereal sales have fallen more than 13% in five years, from 2.47 billion units sold in 2021 to 2.14 billion units in 2025. And those colorful, eye catching cereals are also losing their luster with recent, voluntary replacement of artificial dyes resulting in more muted, but more natural colors.

The decline in breakfast cereals can alto be linked to consumers gravitating to convenient and higher-protein breakfast options and yogurt, further eroding cereal’s morning dominance.

In an effort to lure consumers back to the supermarket breakfast cereal aisle, the largest cereal producer is banking on nostalgia, encouraging children’s screen free play and movie tie in’s to revive sales.

Earlier this year, cereal giant WK Kellogg announced that for the first time in decades, prizes, in the form of Toy Story character spoons were being places in certain cereal brands, such as Froot Loops and Apple Jacks for a limited time.

Reports say General Mills is partnering with Jim Henson Creature Shop, will roll out a special edition of their monster cereal line featuring fuzzy textured boxes which transform into puppets in October.

If the nostalgic efforts of the cereal giants will reverse sales, or this toy inclusion, “blast from the past” will continue is hard to say. But, many will likely take advantage while they can.
