NEW LEXINGTON, Ohio (AVC News) – Severe rainfall and flooding prompted the evacuation of more than 50 people from their homes in New Lexington early Sunday.
According to information from 10 WBNS, flooding began during the early morning hours of Aug. 16, with water levels rising to more than three feet by about 2 a.m.
New Lexington firefighters went door-to-door in affected neighborhoods, advising residents to evacuate as floodwaters continued to rise. The West Licking Fire District assisted with the evacuations, using boats to bring residents to safety.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Central and Southern Ohio helped provide shelter for evacuees at the Perry County Fairgrounds. Meanwhile, the bridge on Ceramic Road south of Crooksville has been closed while officials conduct a safety inspection to determine whether it sustained damage from the flooding.
