COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — The Better Business Bureau is warning Ohio consumers to be cautious when hiring contractors for storm cleanup and repairs following Tuesday’s severe weather.
The Aug. 11 storms brought an 82-mph wind gust to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, along with flooding, downed trees and power lines and widespread damage across parts of Central Ohio.
The BBB says homeowners, renters and drivers should document damage before cleanup begins and contact their insurance companies before making permanent repairs.
Consumers are advised to:
- Photograph all damage, including roofs, siding, windows, vehicles and fences.
- Contact their insurance company to determine what documentation is needed.
- Make only temporary repairs, such as tarping roofs or boarding windows, until the insurer responds.
- Get estimates from multiple established contractors.
- Verify a contractor’s identity, insurance, licensing and complaint history.
The BBB is also warning about so-called storm chasers who may use high-pressure sales tactics, demand full payment upfront or offer unusually low prices.
Consumers should be especially cautious of anyone offering unsolicited roof inspections, asking to waive an insurance deductible or demanding immediate payment.
The BBB says legitimate contractors may also be experiencing delays because of increased demand following a major storm.
Consumers who enter into qualifying door-to-door sales of $25 or more in Ohio generally have three business days to cancel the agreement.
BBB Central & Southeast Ohio President and CEO Judy Dollison said consumers should not allow the urgency of storm damage to pressure them into making quick decisions.
“Document the damage. Contact your insurer. Prevent further loss, not permanent repairs, until you hear back from insurers,” Dollison said.
The BBB recommends consumers research contractors carefully and avoid paying multiple deposits to reserve repair dates.
