WHEELING, W.Va.–(AP)–(AVC News)–Flooding clean up begins anew in the Wheeling area after brief, but heavy rains caused yet more flooding Thursday night.
Isolated thunderstorms on Thursday resulted in up to two inches of rainfall in a short period of time in the Wheeling area. This caused streams and creeks to rise from their banks and once again into area streets.
Social media posts from the region showed flowing water and debris on streets and into some homes and businesses. The West Virginia Emergency Management Division posted a photo of a measuring tape in floodwaters, saying, “From ‘dry as a bone to 5 inches’ in 45 minutes this evening in the Elm Grove area.”
Thursday night’s flooding added to the woes of area residents who were still recovering from the severe flooding that occurred on June 14 when as much as four inches of rain fell in parts of Wheeling and Ohio County in less than an hour.
The resulting floods caused widespread damage, including destroyed homes, washed away vehicles and caused at least nine deaths. On Thursday, Wheeling and Ohio County officials and the W.Va. Medical Examiner’s Office reported the identity of the ninth victime, 83 year old Sandra Parsons of Tridelphia, whose body was discovered Tuesday in the Ohio River.
A new website, www.ovflood.org, has been launched for residents to find flood-related information and assistance resources.
