Cambridge, OH (AVC News) – Thursday, September 11 marks one of the darkest days in American history.
It is the 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Washington D.C and New York City. Using high-jacked commercial airliners, terrorists crashed the planes into the Pentagon and both towers of the World Trade Center. Reports indicate that not including the 10 high-jackers, nearly 3,000 people were killed and thousands more injured and many still suffer to this day, lingering injuries including medical and emotional problems.
A fourth airliner, however, never made it to its’ intended target. Flight 93.
United Airlines Flight 93 was commandeered shortly after its’ departure from Newark, New Jersey. Experts believe the target was to be a governmental building, possibly the White House or the Capitol building, however it never made it. As the airliner made a wide turn over eastern Ohio, back towards Washington D.C., a number of passengers fought back forcing the plane to crash in a vacant field in Shanksville Pennsylvania, 78 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
Many may not realize it, but that wide turn brought Flight 93 over Cambridge and Guernsey County, thus establishing a local connection with the horrors that were September 11, 2001. One man who actually saw Flight 93 fly over the area was Cambridge resident Dave McKim.
Following 9/11, the Shanksville crash side has been made into a memorial, one that McKim has visited. He says he has talked to the family of the passengers and pilots knowledgeable of the events of that day. He also has seen airline documents and maps showing that Flight 93, in fact, did turn around over the area. With a strong connection to Flight 93, McKim obtained a specially made memorial flag with the names of the victims, heroes many say, of that day.
Following conversations with the Guernsey Co. Commissioners, McKim has loaned the flag to the county, to be flown this week in front of the Guernsey County Courthouse in honor of not only Flight 93 but all of those who perished on September 11, 2001. The flag will be flown all day Thursday.
