ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (AVC News) — The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be on display at the Belmont County Fairgrounds Oct. 1-4 and will be free and open to the public 24 hours a day.
The exhibit will provide veterans, families, students and community members an opportunity to view the memorial and honor the 58,281 service members whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The Wall will arrive at the Belmont County Fairgrounds Sept. 29 following a motorcade from Bass Pro Shops at the Highlands in Triadelphia, West Virginia. Setup will begin Sept. 30, with volunteer orientation at 6 p.m. and the playing of Taps at dusk.
The exhibit will open to the public, 24 hours a day, starting Thursday, Oct. 1. A “Welcome Home” opening ceremony will be held at noon, followed by Taps at dusk.
On Friday, Oct. 2, the Light the Night Ceremony will begin at 7:45 p.m. The ceremony will include performances of “Amazing Grace” and Taps.
Saturday, Oct. 3, will be observed as a remembrance day, with Taps played at dusk.
The closing ceremony will begin at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. The exhibit will close at 2 p.m. following the conclusion of the ceremony.
The Wall That Heals will be located at the Belmont County Fairgrounds, 45420 Roscoe Road, St. Clairsville.
Group tours are available, and organizers are also seeking volunteers and donations to support the event.
The Wall That Heals, as does the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., honors the more than three million Americans that served in the Vietnam War and, as of Memorial Day 2017, bears the names of 58,281 names of men and women, 3.095 from Ohio, who gave their lives serving this country between 1955 and 1975.
