ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AVC News) — After a 16-year absence, the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is scheduled to return to Zanesville July 10-11, 2027, as organizers work to reestablish the event as a regional tradition focused on community engagement, youth sports and economic development.
Throughout 2026, the Gus Macker Zanesville Executive Committee has worked to establish partnerships, secure sponsorships and prepare for the tournament’s return.
During the committee’s final meeting of 2026, Zanesville native and former NBA player Kevin Martin joined committee members and the mayor of Zanesville. Martin’s visit highlighted the community’s basketball history and provided an opportunity to discuss the tournament’s future and its potential to create positive experiences for young athletes.
Executive Chair Dominique Proctor said the effort represents more than organizing a weekend basketball competition. The goal is to bring community leaders, businesses, nonprofit organizations and volunteers together around a shared vision.
The committee secured approximately $40,000 in sponsorship commitments during 2026, reflecting early community support for the event.
Organizers hope to establish Gus Macker Zanesville as an annual tradition that brings families together while creating opportunities for young people, local businesses and community organizations.
The tournament is planned for the Ohio University Zanesville and YMCA campus area, with organizers targeting 250 participating teams.
Outreach is planned across the region, including Columbus, Newark, Lancaster, Cambridge, Coshocton and surrounding communities.
Organizers anticipate that players, families and spectators traveling to Zanesville could increase activity at local restaurants, hotels, gas stations, retail businesses and other establishments. The tournament’s eventual economic impact will depend on participation and visitor turnout.
The committee views the event as an opportunity to raise Zanesville’s profile as a regional destination for community sporting events.
