CAMBRIDGE, Ohio (AVC News) — Cambridge City Schools will hold classes Wednesday, Nov. 11, allowing students to attend the annual Guernsey County Veterans Day parade and ceremony in downtown Cambridge. The district will instead be closed Monday, Nov. 9, to observe the Veterans Day holiday.
High school, middle school and intermediate school students are scheduled to attend the parade and ceremony, weather permitting. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the Municipal Courthouse on Highland Avenue and travel along Wheeling Avenue to the Guernsey County Courthouse. The Cambridge High School Marching Band will perform during the parade.
Following the parade, students will attend the annual ceremony honoring veterans on the courthouse lawn.
Superintendent Dan Coffman said the district wants students to understand the meaning of military service and why Veterans Day and Memorial Day are observed. He said participating in educational activities and attending the parade and ceremony are ways to help students gain that understanding.
Primary School students will not attend the parade and ceremony but will participate in age-appropriate Veterans Day lessons and activities.
Cambridge High School and Cambridge Middle School have been designated Purple Star Schools by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce for their commitment to supporting military-connected students and families.
The district provides resources through a Military Connection page on its website and maintains a Military Honor Wall recognizing alumni, current students and staff members who have served or are serving in the military.
Submissions for the Military Honor Wall can be made through an online form at https://forms.gle/Wcdo1Qm9DuvRoQWC6. Information and a photo may also be emailed to john.charlton@cambridgecityschools.org. Submissions should include the individual’s name, Cambridge High School graduation year, military branch and years served.
