CALDWELL, Ohio (AVC News) — Noble County Emergency Services is asking residents to carefully review letters they receive regarding ambulance services, explaining that the documents are requests for insurance information and signatures rather than bills requiring payment.
The agency said several residents have received letters that appear to be invoices. The letters explain the assignment of insurance benefits and may request updated insurance information and a signature.
Residents with insurance are asked to sign and return the forms by mail or drop them off at the station.
According to Noble County Emergency Services, residents without insurance coverage for an ambulance ride will not receive a bill. Those whose insurance covers only part of the cost also will not be billed for the remaining balance.
The agency uses a practice known as “soft billing,” in which it submits claims to patients’ insurance providers and accepts whatever amount the insurer pays without billing the patient for the difference.
The agency said its operating costs exceed the funding provided through the county levy. Soft billing allows it to recover some of those expenses while limiting out-of-pocket costs for residents.
Noble County Emergency Services combines levy funding with insurance reimbursements to support operations while keeping the tax burden as low as possible, according to the agency.
Officials are encouraging residents to return the signed forms and provide updated insurance information when requested, saying the process helps the agency maintain its funding model and continue serving the community.
The agency thanked Noble County residents for their continued support.
