GUERNSEY COUNTY, Ohio (AVC News) — A new community effort in Guernsey County has resulted in 50 locally raised hogs being sent for processing, with the pork intended to help address food insecurity in the county.
Fill the Freezer Guernsey became a reality Sunday, with the 50 hogs totaling 13,249 pounds of live weight.
The hogs were raised and prepared for the fair by local 4-H and FFA members throughout the year. Organizers said the project will allow the work of those youth to help provide food to families in their own community.
The project was made possible through businesses, organizations and families that sponsored or purchased hogs from 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Those purchases supported the youth exhibitors while also contributing to the community food effort.
Select Water Solutions covered the processing costs for the hogs, while the Guernsey County Foundation and its supporters helped support the project.
Organizers credited committee members Maribeth Wright, Sam Bond-Zielinski, Rory Cox Stelzer, Jeremy Morrow, Amy Patterson, Matthew Dolan, Cindy Bond and others involved in coordinating the effort.
The 13,249 pounds of live-weight pork will now be processed before being distributed as food for people in need in Guernsey County.
Organizers said they hope Fill the Freezer Guernsey will continue and become an ongoing community effort.
