Ohio Colleges Join Team Tressel Fitness Challenge Athlete Mentor Network

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — Colleges and universities across Ohio are joining the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge to connect student-athletes with local schools and encourage students to build healthy habits.

Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel announced that every Ohio college and university with an athletic program is partnering with the initiative. Throughout the fall, student-athletes will visit schools in their communities to share their experiences and encourage students to set goals, build confidence, support their teammates and develop healthy habits.

The statewide athlete mentor network expands on the 137 former college and professional athletes, coaches and trainers who were previously announced as Team Tressel Fitness Challenge Captains and Buddies.

Student-athletes will participate in school visits, assemblies, workouts and conversations focused on habits that support success both in the classroom and on the playing field.

The program emphasizes cardio, strength, flexibility, nutrition and sleep, while also encouraging students to recognize the importance of mental health.

“It’s important that Ohio’s students know their goals are within reach,” Tressel said. “Our student-athletes are real, local examples of what is possible and reminders that their dreams may not be as far away as they seem.”

The participating schools include several in and around Southeast Ohio, including Muskingum University, Marietta College, Ohio University, Hocking College, Shawnee State University, Franciscan University of Steubenville and University of Rio Grande.

The third round of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge began in August and is reaching a record 655,000 students at nearly 2,200 schools across all 88 Ohio counties.

Students participating in the challenge set personal goals and work toward bronze, silver and gold achievement levels.

The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is a statewide initiative focused on helping students develop healthy habits and reach their full potential.
