COLUMBUS, Ohio (AVC News) — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will begin weekly updates this week to help Ohioans track the changing fall colors across the state.
The updates will begin Oct. 1 and highlight locations where residents can see leaves change to shades of red, yellow and orange.
“Autumn provides Ohioans with a great chance to explore the outdoors and experience all of the unique activities that fall in Ohio has to offer,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Throughout Ohio, communities schedule events around the fall color season to encourage everyone to visit our beautiful state and enjoy the bright colors of the season.”
Fall colors develop as trees slow their production of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the green color in leaves, as they prepare for winter. Other pigments then become visible, creating the familiar fall colors. Weather conditions, including sunlight, temperature, wind and rainfall, can affect the intensity and duration of the colors.
The ODNR Division of Forestry expects peak colors in far northern Ohio around mid-October. Central and northern Ohio are expected to peak in mid-to-late October, while southern Ohio is expected to reach peak color from late October into early November.
