CALDWELL, Ohio (AVC News) — CASA of Noble County is seeking additional volunteers to advocate for children involved in the court system as the number of cases continues to increase.
Michelle Larrick, director and volunteer coordinator for CASA of Noble County, recently told the Noble County Commissioners that the organization needs more volunteers to meet the growing demand.
CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, operates under the direction of the Noble County Common Pleas Court’s Juvenile Division. The organization recruits, screens, trains and supports community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children involved in abuse, neglect and dependency cases.
Volunteers research each child’s background and circumstances, then provide the court with information to help judges make informed decisions. They speak on behalf of the child in court and continue monitoring the child throughout the case.
To qualify, volunteers must be at least 21 years old, pass a criminal background check and complete 40 hours of training. Following training, volunteers are appointed by a judge.
Larrick said she hopes to bring more people into the program, pointing to the positive outcomes volunteers have helped achieve.
“I really hope we can bring in some new volunteers because we’ve had a number of success stories,” Larrick said. “Any time we can reduce the abuse and neglect of our children it means our program is heading in the right direction.”
Anyone interested in volunteering can contact CASA of Noble County at 300 Courthouse, Caldwell, Ohio 43724, or call 740-732-0847.
