BOLIVAR, Ohio (AVC News) — A 46-year-old Canton man faces multiple felony charges after deputies responding to reports of a potentially suicidal man near Bolivar Dam heard gunshots they believed were fired in their direction early Friday, according to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
Bill D. McIntyre, 46, of Canton, has been charged with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony; attempted murder, a first-degree felony; attempted felonious assault, a second-degree felony; and having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony.
The incident began around 1:33 a.m. Oct. 16, when a resident on Glenpark Road NE in the Wilkshire Hills area of Lawrence Township reported a man knocking on the door before walking toward the dam.
Dispatchers also received a call from a Canton-area woman who said she had dropped off the father of her child at a Speedway gas station in Wilkshire Hills. She reported that the man had been in crisis the previous night, might have a firearm, could be under the influence of drugs and might be suicidal.
Multiple deputies responded to search for the man. While searching, deputies heard gunshots and believed at least some were coming in their direction. An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper from the New Philadelphia post also responded. According to the sheriff’s office, officers heard another gunshot that appeared to pass close to law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office drone team was also responding.
A short time later, deputies saw the man walking toward law enforcement. He was ordered to the ground, complied with commands and was taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered a semiautomatic handgun.
The sheriff’s office previously reported that the man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance based on his actions and statements. He also reportedly said he believed someone was chasing him, a concern he had expressed to the resident whose door he had knocked on.
McIntyre was taken for medical evaluation after being checked by emergency medical personnel. No injuries were reported.
The case remains subject to court proceedings, and the charges are allegations. McIntyre is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
