COSHOCTON, Ohio (AVC News) — The Coshocton Public Health District is reporting the first confirmed case of La Crosse virus in a Coshocton County resident this year.
The health district said it was notified of the positive test Sept. 2. The release states that six cases have been reported across Ohio in 2026.
The health district is responding to the case and has begun trapping and testing mosquitoes in the suspected area and elsewhere in Coshocton County.
La Crosse virus is spread through the bite of infected eastern tree hole mosquitoes, which are commonly found in wooded areas. The mosquitoes can also breed in water-holding containers such as discarded tires.
Many people infected with La Crosse virus have no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they typically begin five to 15 days after a mosquito bite and can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and lethargy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The health district said death from La Crosse virus is rare, occurring in less than 1% of infections. There is currently no vaccine or specific medication to prevent or treat the virus.
Residents can reduce their risk by using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. The health district also recommends eliminating standing water around homes at least every three days, including water in flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet dishes, discarded tires and birdbaths.
Residents are also encouraged to install or repair window and door screens, use air conditioning when possible and fill tree holes with dirt, sand or pliable insulation cement to prevent mosquito breeding.
