CAMBRIDGE, Ohio (AVC News) — Cambridge City Schools is making a series of facility improvements this summer, from repaving parking lots and replacing office flooring to expanding classrooms and upgrading athletic facilities before students return for the 2026-27 school year.
Business Operations Manager David Evancho said maintenance crews, seasonal workers and contractors have been busy completing annual maintenance and capital projects across the district.
Among the most visible improvements are the repaving of the Garfield Administrative Center parking lot and crack sealing at the high school, middle school and intermediate school parking lots. New flooring is also being installed in the offices of those three buildings, replacing 20-year-old carpet with more durable vinyl plank flooring in common areas and carpet tile in offices.
At Cambridge Primary School, maintenance staff are converting the stage in the cafeteria and auditorium into three classrooms to create additional instructional space.
Other projects include expanding the visitor locker room at McFarland Stadium, repairing a persistent leak near the athletic hallway at Cambridge High School, upgrading sound systems at the middle school gym and stadium, installing a handicap-accessible entrance at the middle school, replacing the district’s phone system, upgrading HVAC controls, adding washers and dryers at the elementary schools, and installing a new drainage system near the high jump and long jump areas at the track.
The district also expects to save money by purchasing entryway floor mats instead of leasing them, a move officials say will reduce long-term costs.
Routine summer maintenance, including floor stripping and waxing, painting, cleaning, and adding new playground mulch to meet health department requirements, is also underway as crews prepare buildings for the start of classes in August.
