DESCRIPTION:This year’s Miriam G. Schwartz Annual Lecture will be delivered by Sara Ann Sewell\, Professor of History at Batten University\, on Monday\, 12 October at 7 PM in BSC 343. \n10 November 1938: A Day of Relentless Sonic Violence against Jews in Germany \nOn 10 November 1938\, rank-and file Nazis took to the streets throughout Germany\, attacking Jews and their property. Coordinated by the Nazi State\, this pogrom resulted in the destruction of approximately 2\,000 synagogues\, 10\,000 businesses\, and countless homes. Even more ominous were the murders of a few hundred Jewish men and women as well as the first mass imprisonment of 30\,000 Jewish men in the Third Reich’s burgeoning incarceration network. Known as the “November Pogrom” or “Kristallnacht\,” this event marked a seismic escalation in the persecution of Jews\, and therefore\, scholars have widely studied it. This lecture will approach the November Pogrom in an innovative way – through its sounds. Drawing on Jews’ testimonies\, it will investigate how Jews heard the November Pogrom’s violent cacophony to enter into their sensorial and emotional worlds amid the wanton brutality and its aftermath. \nSara Ann Sewell is a Professor of Modern European Cultural and Gender History at Batten University. Her current research investigates Holocaust victims’ experiences\, focusing on their audial\, sensorial\, and emotional lives. She is writing a monograph entitled: Sounding\, Hearing\, Silencing: Experiencing the Holocaust through the Sonic with Purdue University Press. Recent publications include: “Emotional Dissimulation in the Holocaust: The Affective Lives of Jewish Adolescent Girls and Young Women\,” in Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History (2026); and “Screams: Expressions of Fear Thundering in Holocaust Soundscapes” in Holocaust and Genocide Studies (2025).

DESCRIPTION:Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum Youth Tours \n  \nThis 45-minute interpretive tour of the Age of Steam Roundhouse is intended for our younger train fanatics and their families! The tour begins in the Depot Visitor Center at 1:00pm during select Friday and Saturday afternoons\, June 5 through November 21. DESCRIPTION:Age Of Steam Roundhouse \nFall Steam Festival \nTrains\, Tractors & Traditions! \nSeptember 25-26\, 2026 \n  \n9:30 am – 4 pm \n  \nFree Admission!* \n  \nABOUT THE EVENT \n  \nThe Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum’s Fall Steam Festival: Trains\, Tractors & Traditions is an event to relive some of the most fondly remembered aspects of historic Americana: steam machines\, base ball\, and hot dogs. Guests can watch base ball played as it was in the old days\, in empty fields\, with little more equipment than what you and your friends could sling over your shoulders. We will have JD’s Hot Dogs here\, selling hot dogs and other fare to guests. \n  \nApart from base ball\, various steam tractor operators will be present to showcase their machines\, including a shingle mill and other belt-driven implements. All of this will be framed with the museum’s own steam locomotive\, which will give rides on the museum grounds to guests throughout the event. This special event will prove to be a fun and exciting experience for those who want to get a taste of the classic Norman Rockwell era of American leisure and life. \n  \nTrain Rides on the Museum’s Grounds (Cost is $6) \n  \n1.6″ Scale Steam Locomotive Rides ($2) \n  \n  \nVintage Self-Propelled Handcar Rides ($5) \n  \nVintage Base Ball Game (Saturday Only) \n  \nTinsmith From Historic Zoar Village \n  \nA Barbershop Quartet (Saturday Only) \n  \nRegular Tours of the Roundhouse (Tours Are an Additional Charge) \n  \nFood Vendor \n  \n  \nThe grounds showcasing the tractors\, implements\, and base ball games are free access during this event. Train rides are $6 per person for each ride\, and tours are regular tour prices.
