TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) – Martin Truex Jr. has won the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway as he tries to advance in NASCAR’s playoff.

Truex turned a lap of 193.423 mph to outrun Brad Keselowski. Truex won two races in the first round of the Chase, but he is winless in Round 2 and still above the cutoff point. Four drivers will be cut from the championship field on Sunday.

Matt Kenseth qualified third and was followed by Chase Elliott, who is in a must-win situation on Sunday.

Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick are the only drivers to have spots locked up in the next round.
