CAMBRIDGE, Ohio — Charges are pending against a Byesville man arrested over the weekend for the alleged assault of an 11-year-old girl.

According to reports from the Cambridge Police Department, officers were called to Southeastern Med in Cambridge at around 9:20 p.m. on Sunday after receiving word that the victim’s mother and the 38-year-old male suspect were arguing with hospital staff and trying to leave the scene after bringing the girl in for treatment.

Upon arrival, officers were told that the girl had been choked by the suspect at a Byesville residence. According to witnesses, the man had been acting strangely since the incident occurred.

First responders also told officers that the victim’s younger brother, a 9-year-old boy, told them the suspect had abused him, as well. Officers then contacted Guernsey County Children Services and, while waiting for a caseworker to arrive, the male suspect allegedly tried to leave the hospital with the young boy, but was again stopped by staff members.

The 11-year-old girl was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries, and the suspect was taken into police custody.

At last report, the suspect – whose name has not been released, pending the filing of formal charges – remained in custody in the Guernsey County Jail.
