CAMBRIDGE, OHIO (April 26, 2017) – The Cambridge/Guernsey County Visitors & Convention Bureau will salute the region’s travel industry by inviting all area residents to “Be a Tourist In Your Own Town.” The week-long open house is part of the 34th annual National Travel and Tourism Week (May 7-13), which unites communities each year to celebrate what travel means to American jobs, economic growth and personal well-being.
National Travel and Tourism Week—America’s annual salute to travel and tourism—was established by a congressional resolution in 1983.
“This week of celebration serves to champion the power of our industry,” said Debbie Robinson, Cambridge/Guernsey County VCB Executive Director. “Just look at the numbers. Travel supports one in nine American jobs, including 1,707 direct/indirect jobs right here in Guernsey County. This week, we are celebrating what travel means to our community, and we call on everyone—from elected officials to local residents—to join us in saluting this important industry, and support travel-friendly legislation that benefits travelers and our country alike.”
Robinson noted the annual traveler spending in Guernsey County is $145.8 million, and $ 15.7 million is generated indirectly/directly in visitor taxes.
In addition to its benefits for the local economy, travel can also have a positive effect on personal well-being for residents and visitors of Guernsey County. Numerous research studies have confirmed the positive health effects of travel and time off, from reducing the risk of heart disease to decreasing depression. Using time off to travel with our families is good for everyone, especially our children—kids who travel with their families are more likely to attend college and earn more as adults.
To celebrate, all area residents are invited to stop into the Tourist Information Center the week of May 8 -13 to pick up a 2017 Official Cambridge/Guernsey County Travel Guide for themselves, for family reunions, weddings, or for visiting friends and relatives. While in the TIC, have a cookie; meet the staff and register to win gifts and certificates from local tourism partners:
